Let me correct myself... I didn't mean to say occupy, I meant that we have troops in US bases in over 200 countries.

Interesting, considering there are only 194 recognized countries on Earth. Which planet are the other 6 countries located on?

    Beaten in terms what what?

The entire Android platform only generates 1 billion dollars per year in revenue for Google.

On the flip side, the iOS platform generates 1.4 billion dollars per quarter through the iTunes store for Apple.

Google hasn't found a way to significantly capitalize on Androids market share and that is a major loss. Hell, Google could take over the other 30% of the market held by RIM/ect. and the yearly Android revenue would still be below Apples quarterly revenue for the iOS platform.

Obviously Google has the same opinion as other Android fans... marketshare is king.

Although... in the business world... cash is king.

Congratulations Google... you now have a lot of marketshare. What are you gonna do with it?

Oh yeah... you're an advertising company. I forgot!

The usual pattern is to get some small teaser for free ... like I got hooked on the free dropbox and now pay for the 100GB plan because I love it so much

Yeah, a free period or small amount free would be nice in order to find out if it's something you'll continue to use after the first few weeks. Most of the apps I download only keep their flavor about 5 days. I agree that Dropbox is the bomb though. It's iDisk done right - and free to boot!

    Oh man.

Al-qaeda quickly fell apart after the war on terror and became what is known as leaderless resistance.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaderless_resistance

This kind of movement has top leaders, but for the most part any actions taken by the collective "al-qaeda" (the term quickly became a brand name adopted by many small, loosely-if-connected-at-all cells) are carried out by cells with little if any intercell communication. In short, in this kind of movement, the leaders barely matter if at all. Its the idea that generates the actions, not the leaders.

Watch the news on this right now ... they are talking about how huge Bin Laden is in Al-Queda ... he goes back to the beginning of it.

if anything Ayman al-Zawahiri is a distant #2 leader

Looks like Navy Seals played a big role in getting the job done ... cheers to them.

Dell is losing out in all directions, but HP? They just became the #1 worldwide PC manufacturer again after increasing sales 6%. Dell meanwhile lost 6% last quarter.

I know a loss of 6% and a gain of 6% aren't the same numbers unless you start at a common baseline, but it doesn't take a genius to work out where most of Dell's lost sales went.

HP is doing very well with its Pavilion multimedia laptops. Both of my roommates have one. HP is aiming for the consumer and a big retail presence in stores like Best Buy so they are actually more direct competitors to Apple now than Dell is.

Dell's problem is their business model has always been based on 2 things: 1) customization, and 2) low price. Everyone does customization now, and the problem is that if you are competing in price there is *always* someone that will beat you in price down the road. If you think Dell is going downhill now, wait until Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers really start putting pressure. Since Apple's business model is based on innovation, it is actually much more likely to still be in a strong position 10 or 20 years down the road than dell is...

Next time, I'd suggest you check the accuracy of the "source" you are trying to use to prove your point. The F700 wasn't shown in it was announced just after the iPhone and wasn't available until later in 2007...

Quite right, though I doubt 'rolfbert' WILL check his sources next time. Some people never learn.

I don't see how this is going to work... How are they going to keep the same battery life in this form factor? At this price point, or are they going to increase the prices? I'm not going to go back to my 3GS battery life.

also how about ability to have bookmarks in a click menu, like yahoo toolbar, where it can be shared among a login on your .mac acct? across all your computers, ie laptop and workstation?
You can already sync bookmarks with .Mac, as well as access them online.

As for wanting / not wanting kids. I don't know. Part of me would like kids one day. On the other hand, I'm afraid I'd mess them up.

    Ah, sterile?

Had I done this as a kid, I would have been beaten for it.
Not like bamboo cane or whip beating though, just paddle and maybe belt beating. TBH, in retrospect it really wasn't that bad, and I really did learn to be a pretty decent human being. I turned out just fine too, in fact, I'd like to think better than some of my peers. But that's a bit pretentious, so I digress.

There's obviously a large debate over child punishment though, with adamant supporters on either side of the fence. Which one is right is really a gray zone in my opinion, and while I would like to think soft punishment would be sufficient for my future kids, I definitely see the use for the other side. I think moderation is key in this area; I mean you don't want to see kids running around wild, but at the same time you shouldn't beat your kid senseless. Unfortunately, in today's society everything is construed as child abuse, and I fear that we have strayed a little too far left towards "soft" punishment. But that's just me, I'm sure many of you feel differently.

That was a little off topic.

90 day refund policy w/ iTunes, if I do recall correctly; but I'm sure there's many caveats.

Just bc someone doesn't want children (gasp!!), doesn't mean they can't have them, or even if sterility was the prblem, there's a little thing called adoption. Thousands of unwanted children...

There are many, MANY parents that SHOULDN'T have children. For one of the posters to say that he doesn't want a child for fear he/she will "mess them up," i applaud you. You actually have forethought and restraint when it comes to coitus and relationships.

Wow, think of that...someone you thinks *before* they act......maybe a lot more people should take *that* lead...

Off topic, fine. I didn't bring it up, but if they can insinuate someone is sterile bc they don't want kids, we can have a say in it too.

On topic, if I had accidentally purchased this same app, and not an 11-year-old, would i have gotten that same refund?

Let's just assume it's half music and half movies. That's roughly 142,000 songs and over 3000 movies. At .99 cents per song and $10 per movie, that's $170,000 if he paid for it. And he's complaining about $20 year. Hmmm....

Well, I don't know about this guy specifically. But I own over 20,000 vinyl records. Average 10 tracks each, that's 200,000 songs right there. Not to count at least that many 45's. A collection I've gathered over 50 years. Not to mention 78's, cylinders, etc.

Ever shopped a used music store? Movie store? Goodwill? I have thousands of movies myself, many of which I only paid a dollar or even less for.

I download hundreds of songs from emusic for about half the iTunes price.

It's pretty easy to amass a large collectiion without ever paying retail, and being completely legal.

I can't even begin to count the LP's that have been GIVEN to me over the years by people who went to CD and didn't want them anymore, taking up room. Literally station wagons full -- back when station wagons were HUGE. Cost? How about 0 cents per track, except the time spent playing them into the computer. And I'll be damned if I rebuy all the vinyl I bought through the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Ever have someone GIVE you a few hundred CD's because they're all now in their computer and ipod, and they don't want them taking up the room anymore? Sure, thats probably not legal, however, they made a copy and gave the originals away! It certainly wasn't a legal violation on my part! Are they supposed to put them in the trash? I suppose so.

Any idea how many CD's you can buy out there at 50 cents a pop at second hand stores and garage sales? Somehow, that's still legal!

I know I'm not the only one like me out here! Just saying... you're not considering the possibilities. And there's no way I would EVEr pay to stream my stuff from the internet (there is no "cloud")

So for .17 GHz upgrade we are sacrificing around 30% graphic power?

The i5 can retire more instructions per clock cycle, and so could actually run real software faster at even a lower GHz clock speed than a C2D.

    matte screen option or fail.

Honestly with the advent of Thunderbolt external connections and a matte screen I'd sell my 2009 MacPro and pick up one of these.

Before you throw spears at me I'm fine that people like the glossy and you have your option.

I believe that there has to be a "cooling off period" - at least here in the UK - after making a purchase at which point you are entitled by law to return the product. Normally that period is 7-14 days but individual stores may be even more lenient than that.
That would be a problem for the iPod touch apps that tell you the secret for doing a magic trick. More seriously, there are a lot of apps you might use on a vacation, e.g. finding restaurants or transportation or people in another city. It wouldn't be fair to their developers if you could buy their app, take it on vacation, then return it when you get home in a week or two.

Perhaps return policies should be based on how many times you launch the app, not on elapsed time. You could return any unused or one-launched app for a full refund within a certain number of days, assuming the iPod touch could keep track of that.

Besides the arguments about this not really making sense from a business perspective, I'm not sure how it would work from a set-up perspective.

So you have the Apple TV built-in. Great. So you get your programs direct to your TV. Great. Except that you don't want the audio there. You want the audio in your receiver, so you can power your surround system. So now you're running a wire out of the TV and into your receiver. God, how clunky.

This is why a set-top box makes MUCH more sense. One wire out of the box goes into either your TV directly (if it's a small system, bedroom set, etc.), or direct into your receiver, where the audio and video can be handled correctly.

Content in a "living room" TV just doesn't make sense to me. It's one of the reasons (IMO) why you don't see integrated DVD players on big tvs (where they'll be used with a full surround system), but you do see them on small "bedroom" TVs.

Dunno... am I the only one thinking this?

Wow, glad I avoided the Brea store, sounds like a mess.

Ended up grabbing two from the South Coast location (one for myself, and one for work to develop with, as they let me go early to go stand in line). Arrived around 2:30, and the line was around 300 at that point, with it mostly outside. Thanks to the guy next to me for providing sunscreen, I got a bit of a tan but avoided a full sunburn.

What was strange is that mall security would yell at anyone with a foldout chair, claiming it's a safety issue since it would block more of the sidewalk and not allow people to easily walk by without stepping into the road. Seems reasonable, until I noticed all the Apple employees just kept going up and down the road anyhow and security said nothing. Oh well.

One tip an employee was passing along was to buy whatever model you could if they didn't have the exact one you wanted, then take advantage of the 14 day return policy later. Might be a bit rough for some people though with the expected stock shortages, but will also mean a likely appearance of the iPad 2 on the refurb side quicker then normal for folks looking to save a bit.
