By "small render farm", I mean small! It's made up of 6 Dell GX270, running P4 2.4ghz single core, with my MP as the Que controller (Ubuntu via Parallels). But they should working out pretty good for continuous folding for the time being. I'm building 5 dual processor, dual core Xeon servers (all 2.66ghz) to replace the Dells but that won't happen until the end of December (i'm getting ready to move from Japan back to the States in two weeks and I have most of my stuff packed up). Once I get settled back in the States and have the new servers running, I should be able to commit some good firepower towards the team effort.

Wow, I haven't been anywhere but here for a really long time, I'm starting to solidify I think. I spent some time in Europe long before the wall came down, but then again the Huns were still roaming around - or was that dinosaurs...

We'll give ya' a while to get set up before we set the hounds on ya' :D In the mean time maybe you have a calculator or abacus you can use in your spare time, ya' know, foldingbyhand I think it's called :p

    Cheers and welcome back!

Having worked very closely with the head engineers of AT&T, I do feel sorry for them. As someone stated earlier, that are spending billions to upgrade the network, but all that money will only meet current demand in some areas. The iPhone is such an incredible success that AT&T never had a chance. The same would be said about Verizon had they got the exclusive contract. If you want to lay the blame at anyones feet, it should be Apple. They should have made a CDMA version and split the load between the networks.

actually, you are 100% wrong, if you read your history, you would know that apple did everything in there power to get it on as many carriers as possible for this exact reason. and the only company that would take the phone and give 100% control of the operating system was AT&T, and that was under the circumstances of a exclusive contract. And apple did the correct thing, because can you imagine what a iPhone would be if it was tightly controlled by the carrier? i can. its called a LG dare. and every other ****** touch screen phone out there.

Apple had the correct idea, split the load onto as many carriers as possible. but that couldn't happen, because the carriers are bitched greedy bastards, all of them, AT&T being the least bad of all of them, letting apple have control in the first place.

And as for making a CDMA version, thats pure stupid. because thats a dead technology that very few companies use, and only in one country. everywhere else, they use HSDPA, example europe, where the iPhone is available on many carriers, all using HSDPA standard, and there having 0 problems.

So no, Apple is not to blame, they did everything in there power to make it as perfect as possible, and they did. AT&T is to blame, for being greedy and only wanting this phone on there network only.

I wonder why they've moved it to a later date?

I would guess part of the reason is the "White" Iphone was just released and they are hoping they can unload them all.

All I can say the new one better have a 4" screen, 8Meg Camera, More memory, IOS 5 and a faster processor. What else did I miss :)

Edit: added 4G to wish list

This is almost the standard specification for most Android phones any more so I don't think I'm asking for too much.

do you know how dumb that is? He's moving on to a new company. Along with multiple other people. Also, he was dead on about the Verizon iPhone a YEAR before everyone else.

Dude. 1/2 the population GUESSED Verizon would be next to get iPhone... Are they all epic analysts?

That's not even possible, is it? I thought the iPhone is capped by hardware at 7.2 Mbps?

My upload is better, but my download is the same.

I've had instances in which my download was 650kbps and my upload has been 1200kbps. It's been all over the board, but I'm still happy with it. Did you just install the new update?

I'm probably not as hard core as a lot of you guys, but it seems a pretty good update to me.

The low end MBP is now 1349 in the UK, that's a better spec than what 1699 would have got me yesterday. 1GB RAM finally as a starting point, HD up from 80 to 120 - things that I would have tried to stretch to the 1699 model until now.

I'm probably not looking to replace my trusty G4PB until next year anyway - but I'm happy enough to see those pennies going further with each revision.

The G4PB cost me 1999 back in Jan 04.

    Iain

I don't see this happening, TV technology changes to fast to get stuck with an expensive TV that you need to keep for many years to justify the higher price.

Case in point the new Bose videowave TV it's over $5k for a 46" tv!

I love my AT&T iPhone 4 and 3GS. On the iPhone 4, upgrading to 4.3.1 was flawless with no problems. The 3GS started having battery drain. Within 6 hours, it would be at 60% with just a bit of usage. I would usually be at 60% after 24 hours. I downgraded to 4.1 where I was before. Nothing on 4.3.1 was worth upgrading to. I don't have a supported printer for air printing and for airshare, the only thing I can share back and forth to is my MBP.

Any battery problems on this latest update?

I have had a flawless experience with AT&T over the past few years and will remain with the next iPhone.

or a troll or all of them.

And now, lets get back to OS X.

    Indeed.

My only issue with Lion DP2 and the subsequent update is the animations (I sound like a broken record between this and iOS 4.3).

Everything else is relatively solid thus far.

I think the Amazon mp3's are of a lower bit rate though. I have a few and that was the case. Perhaps that has changed.

I stil prefer to own CD's and import them. Generally I can find the CD for less than the full album on-line. But I do by from itunes or amazon when I only want one song from an artist.

I think you are all wrong. On the BMW model names "ix" stands for a fuel injection engine and four-wheel drive. I believe there is an OS M coming for certain BMW models.

To work well it needs to contain all your apps and system files. For most people this means at least 100GB these days. Shockingly when I got my MBP in 2008 I thought a 200 GB drive would do it all for me. That really didn't last long at all.

Out of the factory, all the system files and bundled apps take up about 20GB. I can't imagine many people then install an addition 80GB worth of apps. If you're using up that sort of space, I'm guessing you're storing a fair bit of video.

My own personal setup is 128 GB SSD for current work. Old stuff gets archived to an external 2TB HD. It works for me.

I am a VS2005 c# developer (Compact Framework) and in the process of switching to Mac.

I am currently working exclusivly on a Dell PC, and toying with the idea of throwing away that ugly piece of plastic, and getting a shiny new mac book pro.

Now here is the thing : how do i keep the great performance i currently have on my Dell ? (bootcamp is out of the question since I do not want to keep booting my machine to check emails etc...)

Will VMWare cut it ? I head some discussion on the poor performace Parallels has when it comes to disk access (compiling is disk intensive).

Any thoughts ? did any one here try it ?

I've been doing full time C# development on Intel Macs (iMac, MacBook and MacBook Pro) for about 6 months now. I use Parallels (only because vmware is not available yet) and have no performance problems. Visual studio is not graphically intensive, which is probably the only area where virtual environments suffer these days.

There are a few quirks that you'll have to work around, such as the F9-F12 keys being mapped in OS X, so if you use these keys for debugging then you'll probably want to remap them, but that's not a big deal, but generally the experience is very good. And of course you can tab between Windows and OS X so that you can have your email and other stuff where it works best and only development stuff in Windows.

Don't discount microsoft - they have money to lose for years in trying to get #1 for MP3 - slowly they creep up and overturn Apple - apple doesn't ahve the same stamina.

A long term commitment, not a short term thing.

$9,500,000,000 - that's just sitting around in cash with no long term debt. I think Apple's got plenty of "stamina"...

Someone claim the got 43 mins frame time on the biadv with a core i860 and Linux, same CPU as the higher end iMac. That is the same as my 3Ghz 8 core Mac Pro. You think it is possible?

i think it was overclocked to 3.8 ghz or did i read that somewhere else?

I was looking at that and the link just gives me a whole bunch of binary text crap. I'm not sure what to do with that.

really? i know i was able to download it somewhere. let me know if you can't find it and i can help later tonight when i get home from work

I think they were dreaming;) my i7 920 with ubuntu does normal frames in about 6 minutes, I think, I'm at work now so not absolutely sure but in that range. The mp is running normal frames at about 2 minutes.

2 minutes? dang that's fast. you really need to be running the bigadv units then.

Looks like 45 mins is more realistic. These chips seems as fast as i920, Impressive.

yeah, they should be about as fast, maybe even slightly faster. the main difference is the 920 is easier to overclock

I spent most of the night last night trying to get gpu2 running in wine on the i7 machine but ran into a problem and gave up. But I have found that the issue may not be with my set up, it may be the wu are bad so I will work on that again tonight to see what happens if I can get a different wu. Here is some info. (http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=82110)

I would love to add the points from my 2 gtx 960's especially since that is why I got them :D

let me know if you get it working. i might try it as well

here is a how too: http://moderngeek.com/node/81

    This might help too: http://gpu2.twomurs.com/index.php?title=Main_Page

thanks for the links. i might give it a shot this weekend

I wonder what someone will do with 77m people's personal details. To encrypt or use each information from a user would take a lifetime!

    15 minutes?

45 Seconds is all it took to get the facts...

Google search: "android market return policy"

    First result: http://www.google.com/mobile/android/market-policies.html

For those too lazy to click...

"Returns: You have 24 hours from the time of purchase (not download) to return any applications purchased from Android Market for a full refund of any applicable fees."

Summary: 24 Hours, not 15 minutes.

This is such a great feature that would perhaps stimulate fair pricing and quality paid apps

If this happens I will be 100% surprised. I mean- look at the Sony TVs with Google. They're like $600 for a 24" TV. Does anyone own one of those? I just don't see this happening. Like the article says the market is overcrowded and the profit margins are too slim. Not very appealing for any company...

A very "noobish" question.....Are iMac's upgradable? The reason i ask is because my current computer is a Dell XPSONE 24 (all in one machine). It has been great, but is rapidly becoming outdated. I can no longer update my graphics card without issues and due to the machines design i cannot upgrade the graphics card. (power supply cannot handle anything better).

I am really considering the iMac because i love the all-in-one designs and fits what i need. However, i don't want to be stuck in this same situation in 2 -3 years.

If there were so many problems with the white iPhone 4, how come Stephen Fry has had one (and used it) from the beginning?

Fry has serious adulation for Apple products. No surprise he did the black to white conversion with the phone.

    265 negatives. 95 positives.

    Wow, tough crowd.

IMO it doesn't look THAT bad. You all have to understand Apple is really pushing hard to get (iOS) iPad users to switch to OS X for their desktop needs as opposed to Windows switches. There are so many iOS features that are being built-in, I guess Apple figures they'll add the same visual cues in their applications to make it a simpler transition.

It's funny though, the OS itself is more monochrome this time around, but their applications are much more...."festive". :|

    -Stell

The audience here are the most toughest critics, but general public will appreciate the changes.
I personally see nothing wrong with making software look like a real thing. It's one of the most natural user interfaces because people know how to use books, paper, and folder tabs.
